Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, Inc. and the Finger Lakes Musical Theatre Festival in partnership with Cayuga-Onondaga BOCES and Cayuga Community College bring the Musical Theatre Intensive Training Program to high school students in Cayuga and Tompkins Counties interested in musical theatre.
The MTI is a three-week concentrated program offered each summer under the direction of industry professionals and held at Cayuga Community College in Auburn, NY.
The program is designed to train high school students in the art of musical theatre performance and also teach the skills needed to audition for college performing arts programs. Equal importance is placed on acting, singing and dancing. Students will attend daily courses and rehearsals.
A limited number of students will be selected from each participating school district based on a student application process.
The program runs daily from 9:00am – 5:00pm, Monday through Friday.
The program culminates in a final performance open to friends, family, and the community.
MTI Curriculum Overview
Focuses on sensory work, actions and truthful behavior. Students are introduced to the basics of good acting technique and powerful, specific storytelling.
Develops the actor’s instrument and commitment using specific techniques such as listening, thinking on your feet, focus, imagination, and partnering. The actor must push beyond their comfort zone and take risks. Improvisational skills provide a creative approach to the rehearsal process.
Music and lyrics are approached from the actor’s point of view; lyrics are explored as monologues and music is considered an enhancement for dramatic intention.
Focuses on the physical production of the most commonly heard musical theatre sounds. Technical skills addressed include alignment, tension release, and tone quality for musical theatre.
From beginners to advanced movers, master the basic techniques of dance and movement; developing a recognition and application of alignment, posture and efficient use of muscles. Training in Ballet and Jazz between 1.5 and 3 hours a day.
Private Voice (optional)
Get the opportunity to take time out of your day for a private lesson with the teachers. Develop the skills needed for singing all musical theatre genres. This lesson will be paid for by the student. Times and rates will be available prior to the first week for students to sign up.
